Join us for this presentation by Tom Goldscheider of the David Ruggles Center!
David Ruggles was a Black abolitionist who did heroic work on behalf of his people in New York City in the 1830s. The city’s Black community was under siege from slavecatchers and their abettors in City Hall and this “one-man-army” rose in their defense. Skilled organizer, courageous activist, and prolific journalist, Ruggles inspired a generation of anti-slavery workers, including a young Frederick Douglass. He was recently named the founder of the Underground Railroad, operating out of his apartment on Lower Broadway.
Refreshments will be served! Masks optional.
